Historical Summary:
John Rawlston Poole and Jennette Bleasdale met and married in Iowa and came west in 1850. After settling in Centerville and then farming north of Ogden on the Weber River bottoms, he married twice more in plural marriage the Bitton sisters, Jane and Harriet, with whom he became acquainted as he helped their family during the handcart company rescue in which he participated. John worked with the railroad and winter found them working the grade at Roberts, Idaho. He decided to winter over and an indian friend told him of the "Island" between the Teton and Snake Rivers. He wintered there, sent for his family and in 1879 settled his wives and family in the area to be known as "Poole's Island" and later "Menan," which is a few miles south and west of Rexburg today. His daughter, Rebecca Margaret Porter moved in 1900 with her family to nearby Burton, 2 miles west of Rexburg. After Rebecca's husband, Aaron B. Porter Sr., died in 1904, she was left to raise her family by herself on the rugged plains. We owe a great deal to these two families and do well to study their histories and to follow their example of tenacity and faith.

Note on Spelling of
Jennette Bleasdale:
From Les Fowers,
Poole Family Org. Pres.:
"pre 1850 Iowa marriage record, “Ancestors of John Rawlston Poole by Elaine B. Poole, Poole Tombstone in Cedar Butte cemetery, Menan, and from the Bleasdale family is that Jennette Bleasdale is the correct spelling. You will see many variations on genealogy files, however."
